Blog Post 4: Adapting my Book

The Maze Runner by James Dashner has recently been adapted into a film. And although I have not seen the movie yet, I have very strong opinions about how this movie should be adapted.  Overall, I believe that book adaptations should be fairly accurate to the novel.  In The Maze Runner, I have decided that a few scenes of the movie must be completely accurate to the book so that the overall story would remain the same.

The first scene that should be completely accurate to the book is when Teresa's character is introduced.  In this scene, the first ever girl arrives to the glade, but she is unconscious.  Then she suddenly awakens and says, "Everything is going to change."  The gladers then find a piece of crumpled paper in her hand that reads, "She's the last one.  Ever."  This scene is very dramatic and foreshadows further details of the novel.  It is important to keep this scene accurate because it shows the confusion the gladers felt and makes you want to know what's going to happen next.

The second scene that needs to be precisely the same as the book is when Thomas meets Minho for the very first time.  During this part of the novel, Thomas is taken aback by Minho's personality and doesn't know exactly what to think of him.  This allows the reader to know that Thomas didn't always think highly of Minho, and helps us to understand that just because someone is your friend, doesn't mean you always agree with their thoughts.

The final scene that I believe should be kept the same in the film adaptation is when Thomas ties Alby high up in the maze with vines.  Thomas does this all by himself thanks to his quick thinking despite this being his first time in the maze.  Of all the scenes, this one is the most important because it is an endeavor that Thomas needs to complete on his own to prove that he is capable of being a runner in the maze.  If, someone else was there to help him or he didn't come up with that idea on his own, then the people in the glade wouldn't think Thomas to be as worthy.

One scene that might need to be cut from the movie would be when Thomas sees a griever from a window for the first time.  This scene would mainly have to be cut because it doesn't contain very much action and doesn't affect the plot for the rest of the novel.

The second scene that should be abolished from the film is when Thomas and Chuck joke around with each other.  Although it's important to know that they're good friends, these scenes in a movie could be rather dull and not interest people who would want to see the movie.
