Blog Post Number 2: The Host

This week I am still reading The Host and conflict is finally starting to occur.  One of the chapters that I read this week was called "Dehydrated" which was in my opinion, the most significant section that I examined.  The most important line from this chapter was, "The chemical scent was very faint.  I sniffed deeper.  It was water, definitely.  Stagnant, musty water, but water all the same.  I took a small mouthful..."

This part of the chapter I found to be most important because it shows how desperate that wanderer and Melanie are to survive the scorching desert.  If someone comes to the point where they are drinking ancient, filthy water, that is in a container that at one point contained chemicals, then we as an audience can definitely see that these people are struggling to survive and could possibly be close to death.  This line drives the story forward because this water that wanderer drinks, allows her to move forward which in turn lets the author finish the rest of the chapter, and move on to the next obstacle.

This story also follows the mountain plot because this novel has many little problems that are leading up to one big problem.  And the "small problem" I read this week happened to be wanderer and Melanie being dehydrated, and them drinking the disgusting water solved this problem.  Therefore, this line also pushes the plot forward so that we can come to the next "small problem" in this book, which should be coming soon.

Blog Post Number 1: The Host

The novel that I started reading this past week is called The Host by the well known author Stephanie Meyer.  The reason that I chose to read this book is not only because of its popularity with others my age, but because it is a story about what is going on after the human race is nearly extinct.  This piece of literature's main idea is about "aliens" coming to earth and taking over human bodies, because they think people are doing an insufficient job of using the planet.  They believe earth is a prized possession that humans do not deserve.

Another reason that I began reading this book is because it is written in my favorite genre, science fiction.  This genre is my favorite because the author is basically sending readers a message of what they think about the world today.  For instance, in The Host, the human race has been taken over because aliens think they are too violent to be alive.  Of course, the author doesn't believe that aliens are really going to come to earth and kill us, but she does want us to know that she believes humans are more cruel then they are supposed to be right now.  And she is letting us know that if we become too dangerous, then we will have consequences.

Overall, I find this book to be a great choice for me because I am absolutely fascinated with the author's craft.  She lets me visualize easily and the plot of the story so far is very captivating.  I really enjoy hearing about different fiction scenarios about what could happen after humans are no longer on earth, and seeing how this story has so many surprise conflicts. I've decided that this book definitely follows the mountain plot because it has a variety of many little problems being solved, and is still gradually escalating.  I can't wait to read the rest of this book and learn more about how this author writes.
